The oldest fortune is that of the Cargill family. W.W. Cargill founded a grain storage company in 1865 which has since grown into the world’s largest private company. Seven members of the fourth generation Cargill and MacMillan families are on the 400 this year; their combined net worth is $14.3 billion.
